How do I adapt my study plan when my schedule changes?

Decide the rule before you need it. A missed session with a near deadline moves into the empty block you keep reserved each week; a missed session with a far deadline moves to the same slot next week. If the same session fails three weeks running, the time slot is wrong and should move permanently rather than being rescheduled again.

The rescheduling rule

  1. Keep one block empty every weekThe most valuable block in the schedule is the one with nothing in it. It absorbs the week's surprise so the rest of the plan survives intact.
  2. Near deadline: use the empty blockNear-deadline work cannot absorb slippage, so it takes priority on the absorbency block and whatever was going to use it waits.
  3. Far deadline: same slot next weekWork with weeks of runway can lose one without consequence. Moving it costs nothing and keeps the current week intact.
  4. Three failures: move the slotA session that has failed three weeks running is telling you the time is wrong. Change the time rather than your resolve.

A concrete example

A Wednesday evening session is missed because a work shift runs long. The problem set it covered is due Friday, so it moves into Wednesday's reserved empty block and nothing else in the week changes. Three weeks later, the Tuesday 8 PM session has failed three times running, so it moves permanently to Tuesday lunchtime rather than being rescheduled a fourth time.

Exceptions

  • If you miss most of a week, do not reschedule item by item. Rebuild the week from the current state, which is a catch-up problem rather than a rescheduling one.
  • The empty block only works if you defend it. Filling it every week by default just gives you a fully allocated schedule with extra steps.
  • Rotating shift work, caring responsibilities, and clinical placements need a smaller fixed core plus flexible time rather than a stable weekly grid.
