
Flashcards, practice questions, or rereading: which to use when
What each study method actually trains, when each one is the right choice, and why the most popular method is usually the least effective per hour.Rereading trains recognition, flashcards train recall of discrete facts, and practice questions train the assembly of an answer under exam-like conditions. Match the method to what the exam asks: vocabulary-heavy courses reward flashcards, problem-solving courses reward practice questions, and rereading is best used as a fast first pass rather than as revision.
The three methods train different things
The argument about which study method is best is usually unresolvable because it is missing the variable that decides it: what the exam actually asks you to do. Each method builds a different capability, and a method is effective exactly when its capability is the one being tested.
Understanding the mechanism is more useful than a ranking, because it lets you decide for a course you have not seen before rather than applying a rule that may not fit it.
- Rereading trains recognitionYou see material and it becomes familiar. Familiarity is genuinely useful for orientation and for building a first mental map, and it is close to useless for producing an answer on demand, because the cue is always present.
- Flashcards train retrieval of discrete itemsA prompt on one side, an answer on the other, with nothing in between to reason about. Excellent for anything that is genuinely a paired association: terms, dates, formulas, vocabulary, anatomical names.
- Practice questions train assemblyYou are given a situation and have to construct a response from several pieces of knowledge at once. This is what most university exams above the first year actually require, and it is the only one of the three that trains the combining step.
Match the method to the exam format
Look at a past paper before choosing a method. If none is available, look at how the course assesses: the format of the midterm tells you what the final will want.
A course examined on terminology and identification rewards flashcards heavily, and hours spent writing long-form practice questions for it are partly wasted. A course examined on multi-step problems rewards practice questions almost exclusively, and a large flashcard deck for it produces a student who knows every formula and cannot select between them under pressure.
- Vocabulary, taxonomy, formulas, dates, language: flashcards, spaced over weeks.
- Multi-step problems, proofs, derivations, case analysis: practice questions and past papers.
- Essay-based courses: practice questions at the level of the essay prompt, plus outlining under time pressure.
- A first encounter with unfamiliar material: reading, once, quickly, to build the map before doing anything else.
Why rereading stays popular
Rereading is the most commonly used method and it is rarely the most effective per hour. It persists because of a specific and understandable illusion: it feels productive while it is happening.
The material gets easier to read each time, that fluency is experienced as increasing mastery, and there is no moment of failure to contradict it. Practice questions, by contrast, produce visible failure constantly, which feels like evidence the method is not working when it is actually the method working.
This is worth naming because the discomfort is the main reason students abandon retrieval-based methods and return to rereading. Expecting to feel worse while learning more makes the switch survivable.
Where flashcards break down
Flashcards fail when the thing being learned is not actually a pair. A card reading 'Krebs cycle' on one side and a nine-step process on the other is not a flashcard; it is a page with a delay in front of it.
The other failure is card-writing as procrastination. Building a deck feels like studying and produces a visible artifact, and it is possible to spend an entire revision period making cards and almost none using them. If the deck is not being tested, it is not doing anything.
A useful check: if a card's answer takes more than about fifteen seconds to say, it should probably be a practice question instead.
A reasonable default mix
For a typical university course with a mixed-format exam, a defensible allocation is one fast reading pass to build the map, then the large majority of remaining time in practice questions, with flashcards used only for the genuinely paired material the course contains.
The proportions shift with the subject. A language course inverts them almost entirely. A pure mathematics course may have no flashcard-shaped content at all. The point is to choose deliberately rather than defaulting to whichever method you find most comfortable, which will reliably be the one that trains the least.
A worked example: three courses, three different mixes
A student is preparing for three exams in the same fortnight: introductory anatomy, intermediate microeconomics, and a history course assessed by essay.
- Anatomy is heavily terminological and identification-based. The mix goes strongly toward flashcards, spaced daily across the full fortnight, with a small number of application questions for the functional material.
- Microeconomics is examined with multi-step problems. Almost all of the time goes to working problems, starting with past papers rather than textbook exercises because past papers reveal the format. No flashcards except for a handful of formulas.
- History is assessed by essay. The practice is writing outlines against likely prompts under a timer, plus flashcards for dates and names, which are the one genuinely paired element.
- All three get one fast reading pass first, in the first two days, to establish scope before any retrieval work begins.
Three different allocations from one decision rule, each matched to what its exam actually asks, rather than the same method applied to all three because it is the one the student prefers.
Where this stops applying
- This guide reasons from what each method trains rather than reporting numerical findings, and it deliberately does not cite effect sizes. The relative advantage of retrieval practice over rereading is well established in general terms, but the size of that advantage in your specific course is not something anyone can quote you.
- Method matters less than time on task at the extremes. Excellent method applied for two hours will not beat mediocre method applied for twenty.
- Some assessments genuinely reward familiarity, particularly open-book exams where speed of locating information is the constraint. Rereading and good indexing are appropriate there.
- Switching methods mid-revision costs time. If you are three days out from an exam and your current method is working adequately, finish with it and change approach for the next course.
