What is the difference between one-way and two-way Canvas sync?
One-way sync copies information in a single direction: Canvas publishes deadlines and your calendar displays them, with edits on your side changing nothing in Canvas. Two-way sync would let changes made in either place update the other. The built-in Canvas calendar feed is one-way and read-only, which is why you cannot drag one of its events to a new time.

How to tell which one you are looking at
- Try to edit an eventIf the event is greyed out or refuses edits, you are looking at a one-way subscription. That is the normal behaviour for the Canvas feed.
- Ask what happens when the instructor changes a dateOne-way sync updates your view on the next refresh. Nothing you did on your side is preserved, because your side was never the source.
- Ask what happens when you change somethingUnder one-way sync, nothing propagates back. Under two-way sync it would, which is exactly why student-facing course tools rarely offer it.
- Plan around the directionWith one-way sync, keep your own editable layer separate. Never rely on being able to move a synced deadline event.
A concrete example
An instructor moves a lab report from Tuesday to the following Monday. On the next refresh, the grey deadline marker in your calendar moves. The two study sessions you created for it do not move, because your calendar has no idea they were related to that deadline. You find out at your weekly check, which is the reason to have one.
Exceptions
- Some third-party tools offer what looks like two-way behaviour by writing separate events into your calendar. That is still not writing back to Canvas, and Canvas remains the source of truth.
- Institutions can restrict or disable the calendar feed entirely, in which case neither direction is available.
- A tool that claims to change your Canvas due dates should be treated with suspicion. Due dates belong to instructors.
